Recording acoustic guitar is a bigger problem than electric.  If you have read my tutorials on electric guitar recording you can really just use an sm57 microphone, spend some time positioning the mic, get the tone you want from your amp, then press record. However, recording acoustic guitar definitely creates some additional problems.

First problem is the microphone. Usually a dynamic microphone is not really well suited to this. However I have gotten some pretty good sounds using an old Electro Voice PL80 especially when coupled with a cloudlifter. But a cloudlifter costs about as much as a cheap large diaphragm microphone, so I would go for the mic instead. Besides you can use it for the vocals later. Since we are doing this for cheap try to not spend more than $150.00.

Most people use the cordoid setting for guitar or vocals, but since this is very low budget, and yet we want the biggest fullest sound – you have to try the omni setting, but do it with some sense. Try different rooms in your house to record the part. You might have to play samples of the part many times facing different ways in a room, but it will be worth it if you can find a good area where sound is reflected around in just the right way. In desperation you can even try the bathroom, which will give you lots of reverb. Don’t be afraid to take your time and experiment, remember every time you go over the part it is going to get better and better. Also remember the part must be tracked to metronome or some kind of percussion track generally I use a live drum set.

Now just as with electric guitar you must double track the acoustic guitar, however this needs to be approached in a more careful fashion.  First, if you are doing a strumming part, try to get a lightly different sound by using a different room, changing the setting on the mic, or move the mic closer a bit or further away. Be careful though of the proxemity issue though, this can help or hurt and sometimes mere inches can be the difference between a good sound and a great sound. Make sure you play the part exactly like the first part!

Second keep the track with the most mid tones to come right down the middle, while the track with the most highs should be split with maybe no more than a 12 ms delay, eight would probably be better. You can also run similar sounds panned one side to the left and one side to the right to fill out a part in the mix. If the main part is a finger-picked part then the “double” should be a different part, less busy, and played in a higher register. Even single notes inside the chord works well and will fill out the sound considerably without taking away from the finger-picked structure that you have taken great pains to create. Remember the key is to get the fullest sound possible while using the fewest instruments as possible so that your tracks can “breath” and have “space” for the vocals.

The Beatles – Truly Modern Rock and Roll Music Band

The Beatles are considered to be the greatest rock & roll music band of all generations, and perhaps they are the most powerful and admired act of the 60’s rock era. Nonetheless, one thing is for sure: the influence of the Beatles rock band on modern music is inestimable, and it has at all times been profound.

One genre that appeals to most everyone is pop music owing to its light and catchy qualities. Pop music is so aptly called because it is a categorization that is largely based on the popularity of a song. There is no clear and distinct parameters to classify a song as pop music. For the most part, its popularity should translate to records sold and radio air times.


Pop music is a combination of various styles influenced by the evolving music forms. The development of pop music is one that is progressive, rolling over from generation to generation to snowball into its current form. As this is so, pop music has taken so many forms through each decade to reflect the musical preference of a particular generation.

Rich Vocals
During the 50s, popular tunes were those that were vocally rich with a string accompaniment and a vocal chorus back up. Country music and American folk music were great hits along with variations of standard formats. Great American songbook classics, crooners and big band singers adopted other musical techniques to give their music a modern twist. The listening public lapped these enhancements up and caused songs like Mack the Knife and Singing the Blues to top the charts. In contrast to these classics, rock and roll likewise rocked the American music industry with fast and infectious beats of Rock Around the Clock, Heartbreak Hotel, and Tutti Fruitti. These tunes not only rocked the airwaves, they also rocked the dance floors.

All in the Band
The next decade brought in what is called as the novelty song characterized by humorous lyric combined with melodies that are simple yet catchy (i.e. Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini, California Girls, and Good Vibrations). Worthy of note is the fact that the vocal harmonies and lyrics of these songs revolved around Californias surf, girls and cars. Thus the label Surf pop. Other popular music during the sixties were youth-oriented band music in up-tempo beat, I Want to Hold Your Hand,Cant Buy Me Love, Downtown, and To Sir With Love.” African American music likewise joined the popular music scene with its doo-wop style that gives prominence to melodic sounds and vocal harmonies. Rhythm and blues as well as Motown soul music were also chart-toppers during this period.

Cacophony of Sounds
From the 1970s to the present, pop music is as diverse as they come. A slowdown in musical tempo was seen in the early seventies when folk-based artists took center stage. Popular during these times were songs written by the singers themselves. Tempos picked up again towards in the second half of the decade when disco-dancing became a favorite pastime among the youth. Dance tunes Play That Funky Music, Staying Alive, and YMCA dominated the airwaves and the disco scene.

Another music development in this decade is the advent of charity records where artists put their talents together to raise funds for a cause. Particularly characteristic of the last two decades are the prevalence of songs by female artists like Mariah Carrey, Celine Dion, and pop icon Madonna. The new millennium kept with soulful ballads, hip hop pieces and dance tracks. Movie soundtracks remained chart-toppers.

Pop music is a genre that will always be around. People will always listen to music and music labels and radio stations will continue to track what songs people are listening to. For as long as people are playing and listening to music, there will always be a chart-topper.

Jazz Music – History and Facts Revealed

The 20th century music world has seen the entry of light and easy listening music with African-American jazz music. Originating in southern USA, jazz music is a combination of African and European music traditions. It puts together the use of blue notes, improvisation, syncopation and swing notes.


Jazz music was first used in reference to music from Chicago early in the 20th century. It has evolved in several other subgenres such as New Orleans Dixieland, big band-style swing, bebop, Afro-Cuban jazz, Brazilian jazz, jazz-rock fusion, and the more recent acid jazz.

The realm of jazz music was and still is predominantly associated with the American black community. These black musicians transitioning from banjos and tambourines learned to play European instruments such as the violin. Black slaves from early America used to sing and play music as a form of spiritual or ritualistic hymns.

After emancipation, employment opportunities for black slaves were very limited as segregation laws were still in force. Most of these black slaves found themselves in the entertainment industry as piano players and instrumentalists. They became low-cost entertainers as minstrels, vaudeville players, piano bar players, and marching band members. Soon, this kind of jazz music called Ragtime Jazz spread from the southern USA to other areas in the western and northern cities in USA.

Ragtime jazz became very popular in the early part of the century. Musician Jelly Roll Morton published the first ever jazz arrangement in print in 1915 with the title Jelly Roll Blues. This printed arrangement brought forth a new breed of musicians playing ragtime. Ragtime music moved on from red-light district bars and vaudeville shows to major concert locations such as the Carnegie Hall.

The first jazz record was recorded in 1913 by Society Orchestra, the first black group to come out with a record. Another group that came up with their very own jazz music recording is the “Original Dixieland Jazz Band”. Other bands followed suit, releasing jazz music recordings starting in 1917. In 1922, the most famous blues singer of the decade, Bessie Smith, also released her first recording. Also in the 1920s, Jelly Roll Morton played with the New Orleans Rhythm Kings and made history as the first mixed-race recording collaboration. Big bands like those of Fletcher Henderson, Duke Ellington and Earl Hines played the more prominent venues and paved the way for the development of big-band-style swing jazz.

Louis Armstrong, a trumpeter, band leader and singer, came to be known as the Ambassador of Jazz, what with his early innovations in jazz music. Swing music is considered to be popular dance music and is played from printed musical arrangements. Then came the bebop which focuses more on small groups and simple arrangements.

Throughout the years jazz music has always been preferred music genre among those who enjoy light and easy listening. There are radio stations that play only jazz music. Jazz music can be heard most everywhere hotel lounges, salons, concert halls, wedding receptions, Jazz music is perhaps also the most unique form of music as there are no two jazz music performances are ever the same.

The History of Memphis Blues Music

Memphis blues music has a very rich and interesting history that is packed with many of the biggest names in American music. Created in the 1920s and 1930s, Memphis blues music was created by musicians that lived in the area, like Furry Lewis, Frank Stokes, John Estes and Memphis Minnie. At first, it was only popular in vaudeville and medicine shows, but soon it quickly grew to capture the interest of the entire nation.

Memphis blues music really got its start on Beale Street, the place where the nightlife and culture of Memphis was (and still is). There have been several books written, dedicated only to Memphis blues music and Beale Street, including Goin Back to Memphis by James L. Dickerson, which came out in the year 2000.

Memphis blues music gained a lot of popularity very fast, largely in part to its unique sound. Because many of the musicians were poor and could not afford to buy traditional instruments, they were forced to improvise using household items that were previously not known for their sound producing capabilities. For example, washboards, kazoos and Jews harps were all prevalent in early Memphis blues music.

Quite possibly the most unique and frequently used odd instruments found in Memphis blues music is the jug. To replace the sound that an expensive bass guitar would make, people would blow into various sized jugs to create a deep and hollow sound. Of course, some of the people in Memphis blues music were able to get their hands on traditional instruments such as violins, banjos and mandolins.

Memphis blues music never really featured any electric instruments until after World War II, when Memphis blues music musicians slowly started buying and using them. Memphis blues music also started to transform itself as new musicians came onto the Memphis scene. This is because many African Americans started to migrate away from impoverished rural areas in search of cities and good jobs. Among those making the trek to Memphis were Willie Nix, Ike Turner, Howlin Wolf and B.B. King.

Still, Memphis blues music remained confined to the area of Memphis. That is, until Sun Records took an interest in Memphis blues music and started signing local artists as fast as they could. Eventually, Memphis blues music would go on to influence rock and roll, modern jazz and rhythm and blues music, and has been cited by several famous musicians in their songs.

Rock in Spanish and the Variations

Spanish is the language of 400 million people approximately! It may not have the universal appeal that English language has, but you cannot underestimate Spanish language at all. It is the second or third most-spoken language of the world!

Classic Canadian Rock & Roll Band The Stampeders: A Family Affair

On November 21, 2011, SOCAN (Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada) presents Rich Dodson, Ronnie King and Kim Berly, iconic Canadian rock band The Stampeders, with a Lifetime Achievement Award at Toronto’s Roy Thompson Hall.  The honour will be as much for what these road warriors continues to do today, as a family, as for what they’ve done since the sixties. Indeed The Stampeders released Sweet City Woman 40 years ago, and in fact cut their first record much earlier, in 1965.

Now it’s all about family; entertaining diehard fans – men now grey or bald, women who shed their Laura Ashleys decades ago – and their children and grandchildren. The “mature”  yet still artistically agile, wonderfully harmonious and always entertaining classic Canadian rockers now take their own families on the road, the days of fending off groupies long past.

A Classic Canadian Rock Band in Historical Context

When they first formed as a local, western Canada rock & roll band, The Stampeders wore blue jeans and cowboy hats.  In 1968 band members moved from Calgary to Toronto, shedding their western garb.  The doors to the world stage would soon open.  By year’s end changes in personnel resulted in The Stampeders becoming a well – honed trio of rockers.  The same three musicians, the winning formula of Rich, Ronnie and Kim would soon make rock & roll history by being one of the first Canadian bands to break onto the international scene.

The 1971 release of Sweet City Woman changed the lives of the band members forever. Their signature tune reached Billboard Top Ten. Canadian music and songwriting awards would mount. International attention lead to The Stampeders touring the UK, Brazil, and of course the US, with performances including “Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert” and “Whisky A-Go-Go.” The band played to live concerts of up to 30,000.

While no tune garnered the global acclaim of Sweet City Woman, other songs received healthy airtime in the US, Mexico and South American, and Europe.  The band continued to ride the wave of success with songs such as its unique rendition of Hit The Road Jack, its earlier southern rock tune Carry Me, and arguably their best hard rock & roll number, the fiery Wild Eyes.  Popularity was also afforded sweet ballads sung by Kim Berly such as Oh My Lady and Minstrel Gypsy.

Recording deals changed from the late 1960s and through much of the 1970s. In 1977 personnel once again struggled, leading to the band’s breakup before the end of the decade.

In 1992, The Stampeders’ core reunited as a Canadian touring band, the triumvirate launching its rejuvenated career playing where else, but the Calgary Stampede.  The group later recorded its first album in almost 20 years.

Dodson, King and Berly have continued to tour regularly since 1992, drawing sold-out crowds in a vast variety of venues including casinos, concert halls, local fairs and dinner theatres throughout virtually all of Canada.

The Family Reunites for the First Concert Date of a Stampeders Five City Tour

On a picture perfect Sunday autumn afternoon in late September, band members sit in their dressing room.  The Stampeders are waiting to perform just outside Ottawa at the Carp Fall Fair. There’s a strong family presence. Ronnie’s 13-year-old daughter Zoe has been with her dad for the past couple of days. They attended a wedding in Montreal, and have driven to Carp this Sunday morning.  Zoe wants to catch a quick glimpse of the fairgrounds. Ronnie offers her some money, telling her, “Take it Zoe, why else do you think I’m working,” his voice cracking with emotion.

Rich has arrived from Toronto with wife Mary-Lynn.  She leaves the dressing room to set up merchandise tables beside the stage.  Their daughter Holly, also a talented musician, has come along for the show. She too is anxious to look around outside.

Kim and his partner Lori now live in British Columbia. Kim flew to Toronto to begin the five city tour, paying a visit to his daughter in Orangeville before driving to Carp.  Lori’s daughter Danica has driven to Carp from college in Brockville to again be part of The Stampeders entourage.  She joins the two other girls for a pre-concert stroll.

The Stampeders’ Carp Fall Fair Concert

Members of the classic Canadian rock band are each well into their sixties.  Ronnie’s a great grandfather. Nevertheless the group performs to a packed crowd for close to two hours including encore, without so much as a short break.

Couples and singles of all ages and both sexes are dancing along the perimeter of the arena and in front of the stage.  A woman is bopping with her two children a la Woodstock; or are they her grandchildren? The band plays their greatest hits and then some, effectively its live, double CD.  Even Zoe, Holly, Danica and Mary-Lynn are making beat to the tunes. Ronnie reminisces when toddler Zoe would dance on stage.

The Stampeders return for a lengthy encore.  Throngs rush the stage to watch, listen, hope for a hand shake or peck on the cheek.  After the conclusion a sixtyish woman with young child in toe asks, “please, Ronnie dropped his pick and I just can’t reach far enough onto the stage to get it; I’ve been collecting picks since 1973; could you get it for me?”

Mary-Lynn and the three daughters are doing a brisk business selling CDs, a band history on DVD, posters and t-shirts.  Many hover, awaiting the return of Rich, Ronnie and Kim to autograph new purchases as well as fans’ vintage 45s, LPs and books chronicling the history of Canadian rock & roll, of course including photo spreads of The Stampeders – still in blue jeans and cowboy hats.

For The Stampeders it’s an  honour to perform for not only loyal fans (and their progeny), but also old friends who drop by including members of other historic Canadian rock bands and the radio personalities who changed their lives.  With the utmost sincerity the band feels privileged to have the opportunity to perform for their own families and make them part of the experience of live rock & roll.

Next morning the families leave the Ottawa Valley in separate vehicles.  Before heading out Ronnie drives Zoe to the Ottawa airport so she can get back to hometown Calgary for Monday afternoon’s classes.  Danica drives back to college in Brockville. The band heads for Toronto for the next performance in Mississagua.

Mary-Lynn and Holly accompany Rich to the Stage West Mississauga dinner theatre venue.  Kim smiles at the end of this second gig of the concert tour, almost embarrassingly admitting, “yes, it’s quite a nice way to make a living this way, after all these years; look at our families, the love and the appreciation which surrounds us.”

The New Romantics – 1980’s London Music

During the late 1970’s Punk Rock became popular and those of us who were fans of Disco ignored punk rock as a passing fad. In the late 1970’s and early 1980’s as an alternative to Punk a new type of music appeared in London called The New Romantics. They could be identified by their Big hair and make up – both Men and Women. It was often associated with the New Wave music scene that had become popular during that time. It has seen several revivals since then, and continues to influence popular culture.

Developing in London nightclubs such as Billy’s and The Blitz, the movement was associated with bands such as Visage, Culture Club, Adam and the Ants, Ultravox, Duran Duran, Japan and Spandau Ballet.

Other artists, such as Brian Eno and Roxy Music had significant influence on the movement. The term New Romantic was coined by Richard James Burgess in an interview with reference to Spandau Ballet.

As a whole, the movement was largely a response to the ethos and style of early punk rock, which had been enjoying widespread popularity around this time. Although punk initially had great appeal as a vehicle of self-expression and entertainment, by the final days of the 1970s, some had felt that it had lost its original excitement and degenerated into an overly political and bland movement instead. The New Romantic image ultimately sought to contrast with the austerity of punk as a whole by celebrating artifice in music and culture as opposed to rejecting it.

New Romantic music is influenced by many genres such as Disco, Rock, R&B and early electronic pop music. The musical structures are usually consistent with those of pop music, as are the lyrics, which are often very emotional, which deal with themes such as love, dancing, history, the future and technology. The lyrics of New Romantic music also tend to be far more apolitical than those of punk rock or other songs written in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Many of the bands featured synthesizers and electronic drums or drum machines in their music, often alongside bass and lead guitar. Over the past few years quite a few guitar players have learnt the “slap technique”. So you play a chord by plucking and you slap the sixth string with your thumb.

How ironic that another great southern music tradition is the blues, and this phrase has entered our language to denote ‘being down.’ If you think about it, perhaps it’s only logical that the 19th century slavery experience would lead 20th century African American culture — still segregated and oppressed for much of that century too — to develop two great music traditions that denote the depressed condition (the Blues), and provide the antidote (Gospel Music).

So pump yourself up with some gospel music – you can either listen to it online or, one of my favorites, is to print out the lyrics to my favorite songs. Once you’re up again, feeling good, and all jazzed up, then it’s time to listen to the third great black southern music tradition, Jazz. But that’s another whole story.

Rock Music – History and Facts Revealed

Rock music is often associated with heavy instrumentation, reverberating through a sound system, and played by hyperactive musicians wearing all-black garb. This kind of music has enjoyed over half a century of popularity with its strong beat and catchy melody.


Rock music started in the 1940s and the 1950s as a fusion of rhythm and blues, gospel music, and country music. Originally known as rock and roll, as branded by disc jockey Alan Feed from Ohio, rock music combined influences resulted in simple blues-based style that was fast and danceable.

Instrumentation for rock music often include electric guitar, bass guitar, drums, and keyboards. Others add to their line-up reed instruments like the saxophone and the French horn. String instruments like the mandolin and the sitar are occasionally seen in the realm of rock music. Of all these instrumentations, it is the guitar that is considered to be the star of the show. Guitars come as solid electric, hollow electric or acoustic.

The electric guitar was played rock and roll style by early rock legends Chuck Berry, Link Wray and Scotty Moore. Texas blues guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan played a fusion of blues and rock. As multitrack recording was developed by Les Paul along with electronic sound treatment by Joe Meek, it was not long after when rock music artists like Jackie Breston and Bill Haley came out with their first rock and roll records. Breston released his record Rocket 88 under recording label Sun Records. And then several years after, Haleys Rock Around the Clock was launched and topped the charts of Billboard magazine in terms of record sales and airtime plays. Sun Records also produced rock and roll king Elvis Presleys first single labelled Thats All Right (Mama). Shake, Rattle & Roll of Big Joe Turner was also topping the Billboard R&B charts during this time.

The fusioning of rock music extended into the 1960s and the 1970s, with rock music being combined with folk music to create folk rock, with blues to create blues-rock, and with jazz to create jazz rock. Electrical instrument ambiance was incorporated into rock music to create the carefree psychedelic rock. Influences from soul, funk and latin music were integrated with rock music to pave way for subgenres as soft rock, heavy metal, hard rock, progressive rock, and punk rock.

Rock music took a metallic turn in the 1980s and 1990s with the entry of rock bands like Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Queen, Aerosmith, Kiss, AC/DC and Black Sabbath. Hard rockers heightened the commercialization of rock and roll with albums and concerts being launched all over the country. Arenas and other similar big venues were used as a places to gather crowds and crowds of rock music fans. Kenny Burrell – Jazz Guitarist At Work

Sunny Nash developed an interest in Kenny Burrell’s music in 1966 with the release of his album MAN AT WORK.

Kenny Burrell, one of the greatest living jazz-blues guitarists, celebrated his birthday on July 31 and, at age 81,  he is still a man at work.

Burrell was commemorated by distinguished contributing scholar, Sunny Nash, in the African American National Biography–a collaboration between the W. E. B. Du Bois Institute for African and African American Research at Harvard University, Oxford University African American Studies Center and Oxford University Press.

“Burrell’s sound on MAN AT WORK was so mellow, it was hypnotizing,” Nash said. “I loved the album then and I love it now.” At the time when Nash was discovering Kenny Burrell, she was starting her own music career in Houston, Texas, and singing at jazz venues around the city like the El Dorado Ballroom with notables such as the Conrad Johnson Orchestra. “In 1966 when I started singing professionally, I was still in high school struggling to find my style,” Nash said.

Sunny NashUsing her music knowledge and performing experience, Nash completed three assignments in the music categories of Jazz and Rhythm & Blues. Her articles are among more than 4,000 articles in the eight-volume African American National Biography set of historical profiles of well known figures throughout the world, which included Kenny Burrell, Grammy award-winning guitarist, composer and jazz educator.

“Just to give you an idea about the era in which Kenny Burrell was born,” Nash said, “The Great Depression gripped the nation, causing families all over the world, including the Burrell family, to suffer after global financial systems collapsed.”

Youngest of three sons, he was born Kenneth Earl Burrell into a poor family that enjoyed music as part of its daily life. Burrell’s mother played piano and sang in the choir at Second Baptist Church, Detroit’s oldest black congregation, organized in 1836 and part of the Underground Railroad, an invisible route ushering slaves to freedom before Emancipation. A piano in the home became the first instrument Burrell played as a child, performing once before an audience in his school’s auditorium. Listening to Lester Young and Coleman Hawkins, Burrell’s first love was saxophone, but his family could not afford the instrument, particularly expensive due to the great demand for metal to manufacture military equipment and ammunition during World War II.

Burrell’s father played banjo and ukulele, which may account for Burrell and his brother’s fearlessness of stringed instruments. At age 12, Burrell settled for guitar, an inexpensive instrument made of  strings and a bit of wood, because his family could afford to buy the cheap instrument. He learned guitar technique watching his older brother Billy play guitar at small clubs around Detroit and listening to Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Benny Goodman and Mills Brothers records.

In 1946, when Burrell was 15, Billy had switched to electric bass, playing with the Willie Anderson Trio at Club Sudan. Influenced by his brother’s electric bass and Charlie Christian’s electric guitar on Benny Goodman, Lionel Hampton and Harry James records in the early 1940s, Burrell liked the ability to solo due to the volume control that amplification gave formerly acoustic instruments. Following Billy to gigs, Burrell began sitting in with professional musicians at Club Sudan and other nightspots.

Kenny BurrellAt Wayne State University, Burrell studied theory and composition, took private jazz and classical guitar lessons and spent evenings in clubs listening to saxophonist, Charlie Parker; and trumpeters, Miles Davis and Dizzy Gillespie. Burrell’s style in his first group with Tommy Flanagan and Milt Jackson’s brother Alvin was inspired by The Nat King Cole Trio, but changed when Kenny became interested in hard bop, fast-tempo improvisational music that emerged from bebop, influenced by blues, rhythm and blues and gospel, especially in piano and saxophone playing.

In 1951 at age 19, while in college, Burrell played with hard-bop trumpeter, Dizzy Gillespie, and made his debut recording with Gillespie; bassist, Percy Heath; vibraphonist, Milt Jackson; and alto saxophonist, John Coltrane. Gillespie wanted Burrell to go on tour but Burrell wanted to finish school. After earning a Bachelor of Arts in music in 1955, he went on a six-month tour with Oscar Peterson. Moving to New York in 1956, he performed in clubs, in Broadway pit bands and on stage or in the studio with such artists as clarinetist and bandleader, Benny Goodman; vocalist and bandleader, James Brown; vocalists, Billie Holiday, Lena Horne and Tony Bennett; vocalist and pianist, Nat King Cole; tenor saxophonists, Gene Ammons, Stan Getz, Yusef Lateef and Coleman Hawkins; organist, Jimmy Smith; and pianist, Tommy Flanagan.

In 1956, Burrell recorded Introducing Kenny Burrell, All Night Long/All Day Long with trumpeter, Donald Byrd, born in Detroit in 1930 and also a Wayne State University graduate. This session was followed by sessions with John Coltrane, Paul Chambers and Kenny Clark. In 1957 he recorded under the name “Kenny Burrell and His Four Sharps” for JVB. In 1960, Burrell signed with Columbia Records and released Weaver of Dreams, featuring Burrell’s vocals and guitar, but did not attract much attention. In 1961, Burrell recorded four instrumental sessions that ended up staying on the shelf until nine of the tracks were released in 1983 on the LP, Bluesin’ Around. Complete sessions were released in 2002 by Euphoria as part of Moten Swing, its jazz guitar re-issues. In 1963, he recorded Midnight Blue and in 1964, began a series of orchestral recordings, Guitar Forms, for Verve, which included a tribute to Benny Goodman and Charlie Christian, A Generation Ago Today.

Burrell moved to California in 1971 and recorded Round Midnight and Stormy Monday for the Fantasy record label. In the mid-1970s, he led jazz workshops at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and, in 1978, taught a course on Duke Ellington’s music entitled, Ellingtonia, the first university course on Duke Ellington and recorded a tribute, Ellington Is Forever, in 1975, one year after Ellington’s death. Known as Ellington’s favorite guitarist, although he never played with him, Burrell played banjo on Hot and Bothered by Ellington’s son, Mercer, in 1984. In 1985 and ’86, Burrell toured with the Phillip Morris Superband. In 1996, Burrell accepted the position as Director of Jazz Studies at UCLA, where he continues his teaching career today.

African American National BiographyDuring his career, Kenny Burrell has released some 100 recordings to date; was featured guitarist on more than 200 sessions, including ones with Art Blakey, Herbie Hancock and Quincy Jones; and played on hundreds of records as a sideman. His compositions have been recorded by artists such as Ray Brown, Jimmy Smith, Grover Washington Jr., John Coltrane, June Christy, Frank Wes and Stevie Ray Vaughn.

In 1997, he wrote and recorded a composition with the Boys Choir of Harlem that premiered at Lincoln Center; in 1998, wrote the Grammy award-winning Dear Ella, a Dee Dee Bridgewater performance; released Lucky So and So in 2001; received the 2004 Down Beat Jazz Educator of the Year Award; and was named an National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master in 2005.

Burrell’s style matured over the decades and his style achieved mellow richness. 

“I listened to Kenny Burrell and tried my best to copy his finger phrasing with my voice,” Nash said “That’s how much his music moved me, fingers gliding gently over the strings and striking sweet little chords among subtle harmonies fading slowly and disappearing into emerging and surprising resonance, and at the same time, emitting that hynotic sound of skin on wood.”

An Electronic Wind Instrument: A Positive Way to Improvise Blues Songs in All Keys

Throughout my life, I have tried to find a musical instrument which best expressed my creative nature. I have spent many decades looking for an instrument which provided the sound I want as well as a performance platform for creating the types of music that fascinate me. One of my goals has been to find an instrument which motivated me to learn about blues and jazz improvisation. I have always wanted to be able to slide into a song and simply improvise within the given key and structure of the song itself.

Not long ago, I became attracted to an electronic/digital instrument called the Akai EWI 4000s.

This is a digital wind controller which essentially replicates the performance function of a woodwind instrument such as the clarinet or saxophone. It has 100 pre-set sounds and a variety of electronic controls which allow creative manipulation of most musical functions. I was fascinated with the wide variety of sounds that could be obtained from this instrument and was anxious to explore whether it could easily allow me to learn how to improvise within a 12-bar blues structure.

I knew little about improvisation but was anxious to learn. In my musical explorations, I had acquired an instructional book which offered a very good method for improvising the blues (The Blues Scales by Dan Greenblatt). This method first asked the player to memorize the Bb Minor and Major Blues scales. It then showed how to use these two scales in creative improvisational ways throughout any song using 12-bar structure in the key of Bb.

Without committing to the memorization process, I experimented with a few introductory exercises in the book and was delighted to discover that the method worked successfully. Using these two scales in a certain key allowed me to play successfully within the designated key (albeit in a very rudimentary way). I felt I was finally on the road to learning what it took to become an accomplished blues player. My joy was shortlived, however, when I realized that becoming an accomplished improviser meant much more than learning the two provided scales in Bb. It would involve a massive memorization task. I would have to learn these two scales for “all” the regular 12 keys. I am now a senior citizen and committing large amounts of data to memory is not an easy task. Just the thought of committing “one” major and minor scale to memory was daunting, let along learning twelve of them.

It was with some disappointment that I faced this realization. But then another realization dawned on me. I was now playing an electronic musical instrument (the EWI) that had a “transposition” function (one of those wonderful electronic controls). I should be able to play in one key and change to any other key with the simple push of a button.

The scales I was initially exploring were in the key of Bb. With a mere touch of a button, I could be playing in the key of D# or even Gb without changing my fingering on the instrument! I opened the Greenblatt book at the two Bb scales (I had not yet memorized these two scales) and worked through them using the transposition function. It worked perfectly. Although I was fingering only one set of scales (Bb), I could make them sound in any key I wanted without changing my fingering.

I now felt that the process of improvisation was attainable. I could easily commit to the memorization of two scales, and with the transposition function, all keys were within my playing ability. The book focused on the Bb scales as its introduction to this method. But the Bb fingering on the EWI seemed rather clumsy (at least the Minor scale). But I was no longer committed to the Bb or any other key. With the instrument’s transposition function, I could learn my two source scales in any key I wanted. I now decided to experiment with all the keys so as to find the set of scales that were the most comfortable in terms of fingering. After some experimentation, I discovered this to be the key of B.

I spent the next few weeks committing the B Minor and Major Blues scales to memory. I practised these scales using sets of Blues Backing Tracks that I obtained from online resources. It didn’t matter what key these Backing Tracks were in. I could easily shift to the key required using the transposition button. I could finger the B scales and with the touch of a button, shift the sound to any key required by the Track I was using. During this process, I constructed a small chart which allowed me to determine how I should adjust the EWI. Using the B blues scales, I need to transpose the following way:

It worked. No matter what song I chose, a simple button adjustment brought me and my single set of scales into alignment with the key of the song. This was a very liberating process. It allowed me to focus on learning to construct phrases, motifs, and expressive configurations within the scales, rather than on having to memorize many scales within different keys and learning the new fingerings associated with them.

Of course, there will always be those who disapprove of this particular approach. Some may feel that the only way to be a musician is to learn everything according to traditional “procedures.” The traditional approach here requires that all keys be committed to memory. If I were 18 years old again, with the memory I once possessed, I would certainly have no problem with this approach. But now, within the limited timeframe my life has, and with the limited constrictions of memory, I’m looking to understand the theory of improvisation and have enough skill to manifest my understanding in real life situations. The Akai EWI and its transposition function allows me to do this.

How To Fix Acoustic Guitar Buzz

There are many bits on an acoustic guitar that can rattle against each other to make a buzzing noise. Most can be easily fixed once you become aware of them but tracking that guitar buzz down can be a problem if you don’t know where to look.

The first place to look for the cause of buzzing guitar is the guitar player. If you are not pressing down on the strings with the correct amount of pressure, the strings will buzz or sound muffled. This might not be entirely your fault if the guitar’s action is too low. If the strings are too close to the frets you will get a buzz that no amount of pressure on the strings will fix.

To fix low action on an acoustic guitar is a matter of going to a guitar store and getting a bridge bone that will lift the strings higher. If the notches in the guitar nut are too deep this will also cause buzzing but that is the least likely cause unless someone deliberately cut the notches deeper. If the slots in the nut are too wide, this will also cause a buzz. A quick fix for low action is a match stick slipped under the bridge bone. If you find the guitar too hard to play now, it’s because you have made the action too high.

If the guitar is old, you may have frets that are too worn. This will make the strings buzz against the higher frets. All the frets on the guitar need to be the same height.

If you are using strings that have balls on the ends, check that the balls are tight up against the bridge. If you find one that is not, unwind the string and reseat the ball so it is snug. The loose ends of nylon strings can also buzz against the bridge so if you have a classical style guitar, check the ends of the strings lying against the bridge.

The machine heads – the tuners at the top of the neck – can become loose with age, rattle around. It is probably best to not get involved in repairing them. Just buy a new set.

If you have checked all these parts without identifying the cause of the buzz, take your guitar to a luthier or a local guitar dealer to get it checked out. Sometimes there can be loose parts on an acoustic guitar that are not readily accessible that might need some guitar surgery to fix.

The first guitar I ever played was a Hofner arched-top guitar way back when I was just nine years old. It belonged to my Dad, who was a jazz guitarist, and it was one of the many vintage acoustic guitars my Dad owned. Madame Tussauds Hong Kong Launches New K-pop Themed Zone

Launched on 30 April 2015, the K-wave Zone is the attraction’s 10th themed exhibition zone and the first K-pop themed zone in any of the Madame Tussauds museums worldwide.

The K-wave Zone is a central element of Madame Tussauds Hong Kong’s 15th anniversary celebration and the attraction’s third expansion project, an investment of HK$50 million that adds another 2,400 sq ft to the attraction area.

Seven Korean celebrities’ wax figures will be on display in the K-wave Zone, the first of these being Kim Soo-hyun, the lead actor in the immensely popular series My Love from the Star, U-Know Yun-ho and Max Changmin from TVXQ!, Nichkhun Horvejkul, singer and rapper from boy band 2PM and Bae Yong-joon, best known for his role in the drama Winter Sonata.

Work is underway on a wax figure of Choi Siwon, a member of the ultra-popular pop group Super Junior, and this is expected to appear with another Korean star by the end of the year.

Choi Siwon flew to Hong Kong for the opening ceremony of the K-wave Zone, which was also attended by representatives of the Hong Kong Tourism Board and Consulate General of the Republic of Korea.

In the K-wave Zone, which is set against the backdrop of Seoul’s vibrant streets, visitors can re-enact classic scenes from Kim Soo-hyun’s My Love from the Star, pose with Bae Yong-joon in a quaint café and join other wax figures on stage and dance to K-pop music. A backstage dressing room full of accessories also provides visitors with the chance to create their very own K-pop looks.

Commenting on the new themed zone, Madame Tussauds Hong Kong’s general manager Kelly Mak said: From now on, those who are passionate about Korean culture won’t have to travel to Seoul to get up close to their favourite Korean celebrities and enjoy an interactive experience created by advanced technology.”

Other themed zones at Madame Tussauds Hong Kong include those on Hollywood A-list stars and Asian VIPs, the British royal family, historical and national heroes, music stars, superheroes and sporting figures.

Tis The Season For Rock ‘n’ Roll With Midi Festivals

The 2011 Midi Festival will start in Beijing, the capital city that has witnessed the birth and twelve years growth of this festival, from April 30th to May 2nd. The festival will be held in Jing Langdao Park in the Mentougou district in west suburbs of Beijing. The performance list for Beijing Midi this year has created a new record, including hundreds of well-known rock bands from both China and abroad.

The legendary American hard rock band Mr. Big will make its first debut in China. Emerged in the late 80s, Mr. Big held its unique style among the hard rock bands. They not only excelled in various extremely technical fast-beat songs, but also whined with their melodic adagios. Their singles ‘To Be With You’ and ‘Wild World’ have become the must-listen introductory songs for Chinese rock ‘n’ roll youth. Mr. Big is sure to arouse nostalgic choruses with their performance in Beijing Midi on May 1st and Shanghai Midi on May 6th.

The Montreal-based rock band Your Favorite Enemies has recently played at Canadian Music Week Festival in Toronto where the band member and manager Jeff Beaulieu met up with MusicDish CEO Eric de Fontenay. This “DIY” band has managed every single aspect of its career based on their community values as they rose from their non-traditional music model since their founding in 2006. They are touring thirteen cities in China, appearing at both in Beijing (May 2nd ) and Shanghai (May 8th ) Midi festivals. Joining them will be over ten rock bands from Canada, Netherlands, German, Switzerland, Spain, Australia and Singapore.

Some new bands are also showing. The Dancer for example is a new band founded in 2010 with familiar faces from some the biggest names in Beijing rock, including Liu Hao (Joyside), Dong Xuan (Hedgehog) and Wang Xin (Casino Demon). It should be one of the big hits among the new figures.

The festival series takes its second stop in Shanghai, the bustling metropolitan. The Shanghai Midi committee has strived to achieve their goal to “Rock Shanghai”, and they are about to make it. The festival will be held from May 6th to May 8th in the Pudong Century Park in Shanghai. The Shanghai Midi will stick to the never-give-in spirit of the festival and bring a feast of performances. The Beijing band Free the Bird, formerly known as Ziyo will also join Midi in Shanghai. Other Beijing Midi performing bands that will continue to rock on in Shanghai include TOOKOO, Yaksa and Reflector. In addition, some local bands representing the hardcore force of Shanghai’s rock will be making their presence felt, including Top Floor Circus, Crystal Butterfly, Cold Fairyland, Mushroom Group and MusicDish*China favorite Boys Climbing Ropes. The Shanghai festival will also feature an electric dance stage, which is sponsored by the Shanghai-based well-known electronic party label ANTIDOTE, and will its strong line-up of DJs and high-quality music.

In summer 2011, during August 4th to August 7th, the Ocean Midi Festival will be held in the Olympics Water Park in Rizhao, Shan Dong province. Rizhao, with its longest and widest beach in northern China and low pollution levels, is know as the “garden city” in China and has been rewarded the United Nations Habitat award. The Beatles – Truly Modern Rock and Roll Music Band

The Beatles are considered to be the greatest rock & roll music band of all generations, and perhaps they are the most powerful and admired act of the 60’s rock era. Nonetheless, one thing is for sure: the influence of the Beatles rock band on modern music is inestimable, and it has at all times been profound.


One of the most universally held convictions, presented beyond question in practically every documentary about them as well as in ‘the Beatles art’, is that their influx in America saved rock & roll music from close extinction.

Jazz Arabic Music Interactive

Introduction

As you know, the roots of jazz come from West African and Arab cultures.
The researcher Gunnar Lindgren wrote an article on this topic that was published on the Internet, (which Professor Andrew Shenton emailed to me). Lindgren mentions in his research that Blues come from the word “BLA” which meant “black” in old West African language. I also found that the roots from the word “blues” come from the Arabic language, because BALA AZRAQ in Arabic means dark blue which refers to what we might translate as sadness, catastrophe, or calamity.

I have heard here in our jazz course some of vocal melisma which commons in Arabic singing style practically in blues and cool jazz. In general the voice of the cool singing sounds like an Arabic sliding chant, especially the style of Ella Fitzgerald, or Chat Baker.
I noticed also that the instrumental performance included many ornamental tones, which the musician added to the skeleton of the main melody. The musicians enrich the melody when they articulate the tones in vibrato. They also add many protamento and glissando between the tones. e.g. Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillenspie and Charlie Parker.
The following are some of the similar elements:
1. In common cases the tone pitches in Arabic music are of unequal temperament, making the intervals between the tones inexact, theses intervals are measured approximately in cent units such as: the 1/2 tone equal approximately to 100 cent, and the whole tone 200 cent. And also 3/4 tone (which only exists in the Arabic Quarter Maqamat) is equal to approximately 150 cent.
2. There are many tonal ornaments in instrumental melodies and some vocal melisma in singing styles.
3. The musicians exaggerate their use of vibrato.
4. The musicians exaggerate the articulation of portamento and glissando.
5. If the musicians repeat one melody in unison or coupled octaves, you will hear features of heterophony— each melody will have different details of ornamentation and timing of trill.
6. The syncopation of rhythm and spontaneous improvisation are common in both jazz and Arabic music.
7. The contrabass plays always in pizzicato (plucked).
8. Many musical pieces (both instrumental and vocal) have no scores, which means that the music is performed directly from memory.
9. Sometime the Arabic singer improvise vocalize in pronounce-syllabic “Ya Liel & Ya Ein” which means in Arabic Night & Eyes. This vocal Improvisation called in Arabic “Mawwal”.

Instruments:
The ethnomusicologist Sven Berger maintains that many European musical instruments have been developed from Arabic predecessors, especially pizzicato and arco string instruments (pizzicato means plucked and arco means bow). These instruments reached Europe by way of Spain.

I personally believe that the guitar developed from the lute, and the zither from the Qanun, and the Violin from the Rebab which in Arabic is called “Rababa.”
Furthermore, I think we all know that the harp comes from ancient Egyptian civilization.
The traditional ensemble of Arabic music consists of small group called “Takht” (2 violins, the cello, nay, oud, qanun and the req . In traditional contemporary Egyptian music, most composers use chamber orchestra called “Ferqa” (which consists of bowed-string instruments (without viola)). There are often solos by the guitar, nay, saxophone, oud, (sometime trumpet), and percussion section (mainly daraboka and req)
Description of some Arabic Instruments:

The Oud: is a plucked instrument with 6 doubled strings whose resonance box (called the “sound board”) is made of wood in an elliptical shape. (The strings are tuned from thicker to thinner strings in musical degrees: {C-1,F-1,A-1,D+1,G+1,C+2}. The player plucks the strings with a pick to produce a typical tremolo, a deep and mellow sound.
The Qanoun: is a plucked string instrument (like the typical zither) and is a descendent of the old Egyptian harp. It has 26 tripled nylon strings which are strung across a narrow trapezoidal sound board. The strings are tuned in about 3 and 1/2 octaves from G-2 up to D+2. The instrument is played flat on the lap of the musician. The strings are plucked with 2 picks attached to the index finger of each hand.
The Nay: dates back to ancient Egyptian civilization in the third century B.C. It is a simple wind instrument, made of a hollow bamboo pipe, with openings on two sides. The nay has 7 holes on the front and 1 on its underside. The player blows across the top opening of the pipe to make a sentimental and melancholic sound. The nay is made of several pipe-lengths to cover different ranges. A highly skilled nayist can reach as many as 3 octaves.

The Arabic Violin: is the same as the western violin but its strings are tuned to G-1, D+1, G+1, D+2. The technique, however, is completely different from western articulation, especially in the ornamentation, trill, portamento (which refers to sliding “glissando”), vibrato, and flageolet.
The Req: is the most common hand percussion instrument in traditional Arabic music. It is a typical tambourine, but the frame is covered on one side with a goat or fish skin. Pairs of metal discs are set into the frame to produce the “jingle” when the struck by the hand. The sound of the Req sets the rhythm of classical Arabic music.
Darabokka “tabla”: is a membranophone of goat or fish skin stretched over a vase-shaped container with a narrow neck, usually made of clay. The player places the “tabla” under the left arm and strikes the middle to produce strong beats (“Dum”) and on the edge for sharp-weak beats: (“Tak”).
Technical Terms presented in order of appearance in the text:
Arabic Musical Terms:
Arabic Music: Music that uses special musical scales which in Arabic are called Maqamat, (singular of Maqamat is Maqam).
Dum & Tak: Strong & weak beats in percussion, especially used by the Darabokka and Req.
Maqam: Arabic scale. (Maqamat is the plural of Maqam).
Gens: Tetrachord. (Agnas is plural of Gens).
Quarter Maqamat: Maqamat which involves 3/4 tones between some of its intervals.
Quarter tone: An interval between 2 semitones which moves up or down around 50 cent.
Three Quarter tone: An interval equal to about 150 cent.
Mawwal: Solo vocal improvisation (called in instrumental improvisation “Taqasiem”).
Takht: Ensemble consisting of 1 oriental violin, 1 oud, 1 nay,1 qanoun, 1 req and 1 singer.
Ferqa: Chamber orchestra consisting of about 15 players (generally the takht + chorus + String group without viola).

Western Musical Terms related to Arabic music:
Interval: The difference in pitch between 2 tones, measured in cent units. The temperate half-tone is equal to 100 cent; and the octave includes 12 half-tones equal to 1200 cent in total. Intervals are regularly counted from the lower tone to the higher. In Arabic music the microtonal interval is used commonly, the most important interval is the 3/4 tone which equals 150 cent approximately. Each interval has 3 parameters—1) movement up or down, 2) the degree (from the first to the eighth), and 3) the type of interval: major-minor-perfect-diminished and augmented. Tetrachord: The 4 scale-tones which contain the interval of a perfect fourth. (In Arabic music, this Perfect fourth could be a diminished “Saba” or an augmented pentachord-“Eqd”.

Melisma: Vocal ornamental tones added to the main melody of the song (common in Arabic vocal music).
Ornaments: Grace notes added to the main skeleton of the melody. In Arabic music this is usually not notated in the musical score.
Portamento: A smooth gliding from tone to another, primarily in string instruments with the exception the harp.
Glissando: The exaggeration of slower portamento—easy for strings, difficult for wind, impossible for acoustic keyboard instruments.
Vibrato: A sort of shaking of the pitch which makes the tone more beautiful, deep, warm and magnified; common for string and wind instruments, impossible for acoustic keyboard instruments.
Pitch: The perceived fundamental frequency of the musical tones. Each musical tone has a specific pitch which is measured in Hertz units. The tone A+1 is considered the standard tone for the orchestra. In the US the standard A+1 equal 440 Hz. In Arabic music it is a little lower, around 425 Hz.
Temperament tones: In western music the octave is divided equally into 12 half-tones. This means that all sharp & flat tones have the same pitch, like the equivalence of a C sharp and D flat in keyboard instruments. This system is called “equal temperament”. The 48 fugues of Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) is considered the pioneer of the temperament system. In Arabic music the octave is divided into unequal 24 quarter-tones. This means that the sharp & flat tones do not have the same pitch. For example the C sharp is a slightly higher than the D flat and vice-versa. This means that the system of Arabic Maqamat is of unequal temperament. Therefore the tempered keyboard instrument like the Piano is not convenient to perform Arabic music practically the quarter tones Maqamat . The string & wind instruments can perform clearly the fine differences between the unequal intervals.
Cent: The unit used to measure the intervals. The half tone is equal to 100 cent, and the whole tone 200. In Arabic music the 1/4 tone is equal to approximately 50 cent and 3/4 tone is equal to approximately 150 cent. It is difficult for the human ear to recognize the fine difference in “intonation” between about (1- 10) cents, especially in very low & high registers.
Octave: The interval between one tone to another with half or double its frequency. The octave also exists on the 8th tone above or under any tone. In western music, the octave includes 12 tempered 1/2 tones. The Arabic scales—Maqamat—commonly have diminished octaves which contain only 22 unequally tempered 1/4 tones.
Heterophony: Subjective variations in the details of a single melody when it is performed simultaneously by more than one instrument or voice in unison or coupled octaves.
Subdominant: The fourth degree (IV) from the tonic (I) in a diatonic scale. This tone exists below the dominant (V). In Arabic music, the most important degree is the (IV) not the (V) like in western classical music. This degree is considered a vital tone to construct a melody. Also in the cadence, the melodic line reaches the tonic through the subdominant. (Baroque music might be influenced by this cadence, as in the plagal cadence in Bach’s fugues ).

Neapolitan: A major chord built on the lowered second “supertonic” of the scale in the first inversion (flat II6) or (N6). This chord will called a Neapolitan sixth chord. The traditional Neapolitan chord dates back to the 18th century composers of Italian opera. However, the original Neapolitan chord dates back to both the Maqam Higaz and Kord (similar Phrygian), which was distinguished by the lower second degree.

Blues Piano Lessons – a Quick Tutorial

It may surprise you but, few pianists know how to successfully execute a simple blues on the piano. Given the hundreds of different chord variations in a 12-bar blues it’s no wonder that many don’t know which to choose so they simply avoid the whole process altogether.


Here are a few simple rules to follow when learning to play blues on the piano.

Most music that you hear is based on chord progressions and the blues is no different. So let’s start with a basic 12-bar blues chord progression which would look like this in the key of F;

Now, I’ve already mentioned that there are hundreds of different variations of the blues so let’s now show you the most common jazz blues progression. Overall it’s the same progression with a few extra chords thrown in to make it sound more interesting;

| F7 | Bb7 | F7 | | Bb7 | Bo7 | F7 | A-7b5 D7b9 | G-7 | C7 | F7 | G-7 C7|

You will notice a couple of things about this progression. First is the A-7b5 D7b9 in the 8th bar before the G minor seventh chord. This is simple a minor II V put in front of the G minor chord to give it forward movement. Then you will see another II V at the end which takes us back to the top of the piece, again giving it that forward movement.

This jazz blues progression is the most common progression you will see and will serve you well in any music jam situation.

So, once you’ve mastered this progression it would be nice to learn how to solo over top. That’s where things get a bit tricky. If you’re just learning, my advice is to learn a simple blues scale which can be played over the entire progression.

A blues scale is made up of only 6 notes and here it is in the key of F;

F Ab Bb B C Eb and back to F.

Now, the fingering for this scale from bottom to top would be 1 3 4 1 2 4 5. And, of course if you kept going up to the next octave you would need to substitute 5th finger with 1.

This scale works so well on a blues progression it can become a bit monotonous. Therefore, I suggest you learn how to play some other types of scales during the II V’s such as a dorian and mixolydian.

In terms of how to comp or play chords along with other musicians here’s a neat trick. Play the root and the seventh in the left hand and cover the third, fifth and any extensions that you want to in the right hand. You will find that this is very effective in any blues situation.

What’s next? Well, you might want to go down to your local music store and get a book on blues riffs. There are standards riffs or rhythms that you can learn to make you playing sound a lot more bluesy.

Justin Bieber is not the first pop star to have sought treatment to improve the appearance of his teeth.

The news that he has been wearing ‘invisible’ braces to straighten his teeth means that he is following in the footsteps of many stars of the stage who have sought to dazzle their audiences by improving their mega-watt smiles.

Perhaps the likes of David Bowie, Freddie Mercury, Shaun Ryder, Liam Gallagher and Amy Winehouse would have performed with even more confidence had they had access to great modern dental products earlier in their career.

David Bowie

The British singer is the subject of an unusual YouTube video entitled ‘David Bowie’s teeth’ which charts just how his dental appearance has changed through the years.

Celebrity surgeon Alex Karidis appears in the video, commenting on the state of Bowie’s teeth in his Ziggy Stardust early 1970s incarnation.

Dr Karidis was alarmed by the look of Bowie’s “fang-like incisors” – teeth which were once famously photographed biting into fellow musician Mick Ronson’s guitar.

The surgeon said: “His two front teeth at this time also look quite prominent – ideally this should have been corrected around the age of 12 by braces at a time when his mouth and his head were still growing.”

By 1980 the Serious Moonlight star had serious ambitions to crack America and there is evidence that his teeth had been whitened although there is still misalignment.

The video footage shows that Bowie had recession of the gums, with signs that his chain-smoking habit was leading to further staining.

But there’s a happy ending to this story as by 1995, around the time of his marriage to supermodel Iman, Dr Alex points out that the crookedness between his canines and incisors had disappeared.

This, he believes, is “evidence of good cosmetic surgery” and, most probably, some well-placed crowns.

Shaun Ryder

Happy Mondays singer Shaun Ryder’s heyday came many years after David Bowie first stormed the charts. In the late 80s, Ryder’s vocals graced top 20 hits such as Step On, Hallelujah and Loose Fit.

But after some more hits with the band Black Grape, Ryder’s teeth were starting to have a bit of a loose fit – the result possibly of years of heroin abuse and “some poor dental work” in his early years”.

A solution was offered by a dentist who, in 2004, offered £40,000-worth of free dental treatment in return for Ryder doing promotional work for his surgery.

The singer told Q Magazine: “My old teeth looked like a row of derelict houses or a street that had been bombed in the war. These new teeth are like show-home teeth.”

There is still time for young pop upstarts like Justin Bieber to take good care of their teeth and with new, improved medical treatments on the market, there is no excuse not to have a great dental appearance.

How Can Learning Jazz Improve a Classical Musician’s Skills-mozart Learned Improvisation

Classical music is a sophisticated art form where talking during performances (much less to the musicians) is frowned upon. Yet in jazz, it is very common for the audience to speak to musicians during performances as a way of complimenting their improvisational skills.

Elements of jazz can be found in gospel, country, pop, R&B, movie soundtracks, and other musical forms. However, when the average person uses the word “jazz,” they may not understand the culture or the language.

Many people associate improvisation with jazz and vice-versa. However, improvisation has been an integral part of classical music history, stemming back to the medieval period in Gregorian chants. These chants used additional melodies above the Cantus Firmus (fixed melody in Latin), which were improvised by Medieval musicians to glorify God. In the later periods, improvisation was used in performances outside of churches. J.S. Bach, Handel, Mozart, Beethoven, and Liszt all excelled in improvisation, which was then referred to as extemporization. Bartok’s “Mikrokosmos” were originally improvised as were Beethoven’s famous sketch books (which he later used in formal works).

Near the beginning of the 20th Century, improvisation disappeared in the Romantic Period as performers began mastering composers’ works note for note; the art of improvisation was eventually lost. Schubert’s impromptus, contrary to their title, were not improvised but written out methodically. Playing classical music well is a skill requiring great discipline and talent, but the same can be said for jazz. Both disciplines use the same musical alphabet, yet have somehow managed to create different nomenclatures for each respectively.

Historically, jazz music has not been associated with higher education. However, the great Scott Joplin, an African-American jazz composer of the late 19th to early 20th century, took formal lessons with a classical German-born piano teacher and the Creole performers of New Orleans were often Conservatory-trained in Paris.

Both classical and jazz music are disciplines requiring creativity. The classical musician, after mastering the techniques must interpret the score and bring the written notes to life in a performance. The challenge of a jazz musician is to use, simultaneously, both improvisational talent and the technique required to perform unplanned music for a live audience. To draw an analogy, a classical musician is like an actor with a full script – having to memorize and master it, then bringing the character to life. A jazz musician is like an actor with no script, only a few guidelines to follow, yet charged with creating dialogue and instantly performing in character. In its purest essence, technicality must be mastered. One would argue that the task of learning and memorizing a sonata (15-60 pages) or concerto (often exceeding 100 pages) is a phenomenal task! The best classical and jazz musicians must both be proficient in technique, but the more challenging task is for them to able to augment their technical skills in a performance to move their audience emotionally. All musicians need to play from their hearts to truly affect their audience in a meaningful way.

Recently, Conservatory Canada has implemented a new examination category implementing jazz idioms, nomenclature and styles. The Royal Conservatory has for several years used a popular syllabus for their studies selection. In addition to the previously mentioned Jazz Studies program offered at Juilliard, Ivy League schools have also shown their support; Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, and Berkley currently offer or are implementing jazz programs. These institutions have embraced an original approach in combining classical and jazz instruction.

We cannot claim that one art form is more or less sophisticated than another. Classical musicians may not fully comprehend jazz culture, just as jazz musicians may not fully interpret classical culture. However, because music is a universal language, the understanding of its different forms and dialects are beneficial. These new “bilingual” musicians are able to better communicate with their audience in various ways. Following the same “early education” concept used for spoken languages, we need to educate children in both classical and jazz music. Children who study classical and jazz at the same time will be able to understand both cultures and fully realize their musical potential.

Building calluses on your fingertips will allow you to hold down the strings of the guitar without any pain while flattening your fingertips to produce a better sounding note.

You build up calluses and strength from practicing. Practice, practice and more practice. In time the pain will subside, but you have to get through this difficult stage of playing first, so hang in there.

Listen to your body though. If you are in serious pain then by all means give your hands and fingers a rest.

Here is a great exercise to help strengthen your hands and fingers and to build up calluses:

This exercise will also familiarize you with the entire neck of your guitar and give you the agility to play chords and solos. Building the muscles in your hands will improve your stamina for playing and will develop what is called “muscle memory”.

The object of this exercise is to play each note going up and down the neck of the guitar.

Start with your pointer finger on the 6th string 1st fret, let your fingers follow up the neck of the guitar, one note at a time, staying on the 6th string until your pinky finger reaches the fourth fret.
Play the 1st fret with your pointer finger
Play the 2nd fret with your middle finger
Play the 3rd fret with your ring finger
Play the 4th fret with your pinky finger

Note: After you have played the first fret do not lift your pointer finger up. Keep each finger on the string as you play them. This is important as it will aid in the strengthening process.

Repeat the same process on the 5th string, then the 4th, and so on.

When you get to the bottom string, slide your entire hand over one fret without lifting your fingers.

So at this point, your pinky finger should be on the 1st string 5th fret, your ring finger on the 4th fret, middle finger on the 3rd fret and your pointer finger on the 2nd fret.

Now play in reverse, starting with your pinky, going back up the guitar to the 6th string, only this time you have to lift up your fingers as you play.

Then simply repeat the process until you reach the last fret of your guitar.

Do not rush this exercise or you will develop poor playing habits. Go nice and slow making sure you are producing a nice tone with each note you play.

More Beginner Guitar Tips

Make sure to stretch your fingers and hands before practicing.

Learn to actually read music and not just tablature.

Hire a guitar teacher if you can afford it. A teacher will be able to catch any mistakes you are making and correct you on the spot. This will help you develop better playing habits. If you cannot afford a guitar teacher, then invest in a good home study course.

Learn how to play chords, scales and techniques and not just your favorite songs. I know you just want to jump right in and learn “Stairway to Heaven”, but if you do not put the time in to learn the theory behind those great songs, you will not improve as a guitar player.

Do not pack up your guitar. Leave it out in the open. This will make it more convenient for you to just pick up your guitar and play at any time.

Practice everyday for at least 20 minutes, more if possible. If you find yourself getting bored, or making too many mistakes, then take a break and do something else. 20 minutes of quality practice is better than an hour of sloppy practice.

Listen to other guitarists and not just in your favorite genre of music. You will be surprised at how other styles of music can influence your playing.

Play with other musicians as often as possible. This is a great way to learn and pick up new techniques and advice.

Learn the proper way to string and tune your guitar.

Learn the proper way to take care of and maintain your instrument.

Pop music has been viewed as a fringe cultural medium ever since its inception, but it has its own myths, legends, and folklore which carry weight amongst those who follow its logical symbolism. Elvis Presley (1935-77) was called `the King of Rock `n` Roll` when he recorded with the Sun records company, and the view was widely held that Rock `n` Roll died in 1958 when Elvis went into the US army:

`The moon stood still on Blueberry hill
And lingered until my dreams came true.`1


When Led Zeppelin were first mooted as the first heavy metal band (1969-), drummer Keith Moon (1946-78) of the rock band The Who (1964-) reputedly said in 1966 of the concept:

`It sounds like it`ll go down like a lead baloon.`2


Led Zeppelin played up to Moon by putting a picture of the German passenger airship Hindenberg in the USA in 1937 crashing in flames at Lakehurst, New Jersey, on the cover of Led Zeppelin I, their first album:

`Lots of people talk and few of them know,
Soul of a woman was created below.`3

In The Prophecies the French seer Michel Nostradamus (1503-66) predicted `terror from the skies` (10. 72) but not until 1999. According to the apocalyptic book of Revelation in the Bible,`the woman clothed with the sun and with the moon at her feet`(12. 1) gives birth to the `New Redeemer` while the `red dragon` waits in vain to devour him. The sun may be equated with the red sun of Japan`s defeat after Pearl Harbor in 1941 and the moon with the yellow moon of Al Qaeda`s defeat after New York Harbor in 2001 where the statue of Liberty held aloft freedom`s torch as the terrorists bringing `terror from the skies` crashed their hijacked civil airliners into the World Trade Centre.

In pop music terms, Elvis` aborted career with Sun records, and the observation by `Moon the loon` that Led Zeppelin were as doomed as New York`s Twin Towers, also fits the symbolism of Redemption and Resurrection through the `soul of a woman`. According to Revelation `woman`s seed` will receive a `new heaven and Earth` from God. Because Jesus was born from the Virgin Mary uncontaminated by male semen, God`s observation to Eve that her seed will have `perpetual enmity` with the `serpent`s seed` is understandable. Because women have a penis of their own and so represent the independent and denied human species.

According to Genesis the head of the serpent will be crushed by the heel of Eve as she leaves Earth (3. 15), which suggests that `woman`s seed` will have the ascendency on the planet sometime in the future. In the late twentieth century pop groups like The Spice Girls (1994-) and Destiny`s Child (1998-) emerged along with individual female singing stars such as Beyonce Knowles, Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears:

`Stronger, than yesterday. Now it’s nothing but my way. My loneliness ain’t killing me no more. I, I’m stronger.`4

But the woman who can strut her stuff with her own penis visible down the leg of her jeans has yet to appear on the world`s stage.
Elvis Presley was reportedly once arrested for evincing an erection while swinging his hips rhythmically,5 which may have resulted in his `political` assassination, that is, he was enlisted in the US army to prevent him from continuing. If Rock `n` Roll was to reemerge from terrorism, `the woman clothed with the sun and with the moon at  her feet` would be giving give birth to a female Elvis for the 21st century, with her own penis and Christian proselytizing to the fore. So far female pop groups like Heart (1963-) or Vixen (1974-) have focused on musicianship admixed with woman`s glamour, but the future must hold the babe band fronted by a woman displaying her humanity`s delectable wobblers and her erection clearly visible inside her spandex leotard if `woman`s seed` is to prosper and escape from the Earth to the stars in heaven:

`Till now I always got by on my own.
I never really cared until I met you.
And now it chills me to the bone.

How do I get you alone?`8

The Cycle of Pop Music

Rock music has always had its critics and those that wish that rock and pop music would just go away. But over the years rock has proven to be pretty resilient and has withstood the test of time. Pop music is a bit of a different animal than rock music although the two genres do tend to cross over a great deal. Rock music is usually classified as music driven by electric guitar and all the various sub-genres of rock are usually identified with electric guitar driven music. Rock usually has a certain angst or message to it and many in the rock music industry take their music and their message very seriously. Pop music is usually a little more encompassing than rock music. Pop music is used to identify music that seems to be universally popular with a large audience and can cross over from genre to genre. Pop is usually accepted as being short for popular so what we are really dealing with here is what the music industry considers to be popular music which translates into music that has greater potential to sell a lot of records. Pop music is music that is designed to be catchy to the ear and grab a large audience right away. Many newer country artists are starting to write songs that are country but are also being classified as pop because of their universally catchy hooks. Sometimes pop can create other genres of music due to the growing popularity of the music within the pop genre. Disco was pop music until it evolved into its own music genre and became very popular in the 1970’s. Hip Hop is a mixing of rap and pop music that has become an extremely popular sub-genre of pop and stands today as one of the most popular genres of music in the industry. But rock music always seems to be there whether it is in the background as it was in the 1980’s or in the foreground as it was in the 1960’s and seems to be again today. Rock music seems to work in cycles and those cycles are definitely influenced by the popularity of pop music at the time. It seems that there is a large audience within the music industry that likes to jump from one genre to the next and that audience is the one that creates the pop music crazes that rule from year to year and that audience also dictates when rock music is at its peak and when rock music seems to be in decline. In the days when Britney Spears and Christine Aguilera were at the peak of their popularity pop music was at its peak which cause people to lose interest in rock music. Artists such as Pearl Jam and Metallica seemed to lose their luster and their record sales shifted to those acts offering a more pop music sound. Today acts like The White Stripes and The Killers are starting to bring rock music back to the forefront and it won’t be long before rock music is giving hip hop and other forms of pop music a run for their money.

Rock Music – History and Facts Revealed

Rock music is often associated with heavy instrumentation, reverberating through a sound system, and played by hyperactive musicians wearing all-black garb. This kind of music has enjoyed over half a century of popularity with its strong beat and catchy melody.


Rock music started in the 1940s and the 1950s as a fusion of rhythm and blues, gospel music, and country music. Originally known as rock and roll, as branded by disc jockey Alan Feed from Ohio, rock music combined influences resulted in simple blues-based style that was fast and danceable.

Instrumentation for rock music often include electric guitar, bass guitar, drums, and keyboards. Others add to their line-up reed instruments like the saxophone and the French horn. String instruments like the mandolin and the sitar are occasionally seen in the realm of rock music. Of all these instrumentations, it is the guitar that is considered to be the star of the show. Guitars come as solid electric, hollow electric or acoustic.

The electric guitar was played rock and roll style by early rock legends Chuck Berry, Link Wray and Scotty Moore. Texas blues guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan played a fusion of blues and rock. As multitrack recording was developed by Les Paul along with electronic sound treatment by Joe Meek, it was not long after when rock music artists like Jackie Breston and Bill Haley came out with their first rock and roll records. Breston released his record Rocket 88 under recording label Sun Records. And then several years after, Haleys Rock Around the Clock was launched and topped the charts of Billboard magazine in terms of record sales and airtime plays. Sun Records also produced rock and roll king Elvis Presleys first single labelled Thats All Right (Mama). Shake, Rattle & Roll of Big Joe Turner was also topping the Billboard R&B charts during this time.

The fusioning of rock music extended into the 1960s and the 1970s, with rock music being combined with folk music to create folk rock, with blues to create blues-rock, and with jazz to create jazz rock. Electrical instrument ambiance was incorporated into rock music to create the carefree psychedelic rock. Influences from soul, funk and latin music were integrated with rock music to pave way for subgenres as soft rock, heavy metal, hard rock, progressive rock, and punk rock.

Rock music took a metallic turn in the 1980s and 1990s with the entry of rock bands like Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Queen, Aerosmith, Kiss, AC/DC and Black Sabbath. Hard rockers heightened the commercialization of rock and roll with albums and concerts being launched all over the country. Arenas and other similar big venues were used as a places to gather crowds and crowds of rock music fans. Live performances in rock concerts had rock fans screaming and going wild over rock bands performing to full performance level complete with stage design and pyrotechnics.

Some of the other developments in rock music are retro style grunge, theatrical glam rock (Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, and the New York Dolls), intense Britpop (John Lennon and the Beatles), indie rock and nu rock (Police, Duran Duran, Eurythmics, and the Culture Club).

Rock music has not been as popular with music critics at some point in time owing to its dark and overly loud metallic sound. But innovations and developments in look, style and sound has slowly developed a following for rock music not only in the young crowd but for the public in general as well. The History And Characteristics Of The Jazz Combo

Jazz is an American art form whose roots date back to the mid-19th century slave songs and chants. The early 20th century saw the art form blossom as instrumental music in the southern United States, mainly along the Mississippi river and specifically New Orleans, Louisiana.


Early instrumental jazz combos of New Orleans varied in instrumentation. More often than not, these early jazz groups generally consisted of trumpet, clarinet, trombone, tuba and drums. This instrumentation became what is known as the “dixieland” combo, making its way up the Mississippi river to Chicago where the music became popularized by jazz greats such as Louis Armstrong.

Dixieland combos can be thought of as groups that play “polyphonic” improvisational music. Each instrument is independent of every other instrument, with each player creating separate musical improvisations based on known melodies, or “tunes” of the day.

The players of these early jazz combos each had a separate role within the group. The trumpet player was depended upon to state the melody of the song, while the clarinet would improvise complex lines above him. The trombonists role was to improvise or “fill in” the middle register with lines and notes that were essential to the chord changes of the song itself. The tuba player (or bass player) generally laid down root notes (and 5ths) of each chord on beats 1 and 3 of each measure. The tuba served as the harmonic anchor for the group. Lastly, it was the drummers role to keep everyone together by keeping a steady beat throughout the entirety of the song.

As jazz music developed throughout the 1940s and 1950s, jazz combo instrumentation began to become more standardized. The jazz “quintet” and “sextet” became very popular during this time. The quintet consisted of trumpet and alto (or tenor) sax as the main melodic instruments while the rhythm section (piano, bass and drums) took care of rhythm and harmony.

The sextet added a trombone to form what essentially was a three horn front line, with rhythm section accompaniment. The extra melodic instrument of the sextet made it possible for the horns to add more harmonic depth to the sound of the group. Each instrument had a role not only as a melodic voice, but also as an integral component of the harmonic structure as well.

Modern jazz combos consist of a variety of instrumentation – 4, 5 horn combos are common place. As the group grows in size however, the name “combo” is replaced by “band” or “little big band”.

The jazz combo has provided a musical and creative outlet for countless musicians over the last 100 years. The jazz combo continues to provide jazz musicians the opportunity to work together to make music not only as a group but also to develop their own voice as individual jazz improvisers. It is, and probably always will be, the perfect vehicle for learning the art of jazz improvisation.

A couple reasons to really like this course are that Nate doesn’t just throw a ton of chords and scales your way and then tell you to “play like a blues guitarist”, like some other courses have a bad habit of doing.

He shows you scales, but keeps it simple by only using 2 positions, then proceeds to break everything apart and totally dissects it all so you can truly understand what the blues is really all about.

Basically you will learn how blues scales really work, and you will learn about each and every note in the scales, and why some notes sound good and why others don’t. These lessons are important in becoming a guitarist that actually knows what they are doing, as opposed to someone that may only be able to replicate but not originate. By the end of the course you should be well on your way to creating intelligent licks on the spot, and actually improvising on your instrument.

Another bonus is that you will learn a bit of music theory as well. An example would be how scales and chords are built, 4 popular blues progressions, as well as some other scales that can be used when playing the blues.

Everybody wants to be like them-the rock gods. People hero-worship them. They buy their albums, watch their concerts, and even try to dress like them. A lot of people aspire to become rock stars. They want fame, money, and other things that come with the image of being a musical icon. Young people today want to be rock stars more than anything else. They want to sing loud songs, strum the guitars to produce loud music, and beat the drums real hard. Young people want to experience the euphoria that these rock icons claim they feel whenever they’re on stage.

The rock and roll era started in the traces its roots in the 1950’s. When a form of music popular music with vocal melody accompanied by drums, guitars, and bass were introduced to the mainstream. It became a hit and gave birth to different forms of rock and roll. In 60’s there were folk rock, jazz-rock fusion, and Psychedelic rock. Jimi Hendrix was a hit in the 60’s, rock fanatics consider him as the greatest guitarist in rock history.

In the 1970’s, soul, funk, and latin incorporated its influences on rock and roll music and developed a number of sub-genres. This included soft rock, blues rock, hard rock, progressive rock, punk rock, and heavy metal. The 1970’s featured bands like Fleetwood Mac and Led Zepplin. Psychedelic rock and progressive rock merged and gave birth to Glamour Rock.

The 1980’s added different forms of rock like synth rock and alternative rock. Grunge-rock, Britpop, Indie rock, piano rock, sufi rock, and nu rock were hits in the 1990’s. Nirvana, with lead vocalist Kurt Cobain, was the major influence in grunge era.

Fame and glamor have taken the limelight in the rock and roll industry. What is on the back seat are number of famous rock stars and rock icons who died before they reached the age of 30. They died  premature deaths.

Jimi Hendrix, probably the best guitar player ever died in bed after drinking wine and taking Vesperax sleeping pills. Some believe he committed suicide because of a sad poem found in his apartment. Others believe that Hendrix was murdered. He was forced to take the sleeping pills and the wine and was suffocated with a scarf by professionals hired by his manager Michael Jeffery. Many believe however that the potency of the sleeping pills were misjudged and suffocated in his sleep because he failed to regain consciousness when he vomited. Prior to his death Hendrix was known for the use of drugs like heroin and LSD-a known “trip” drug. Clinical studies show that LSD users experience flashbacks of certain people’s experience. These flashbacks occurs suddenly and may occur a few days after intake.

Kurt Cobain, the lead vocalist of Nirvana, famous for his abrasive and disturbing songwriting and vocal style died at age 27. He was cited as one of the most influential rock and roll musicians of all time. Reports say that throughout Cobain’s life he battled anxiety and depression, bronchitis, and intense physical pain due to an undiagnosed stomach condition. Reports say that because of the physical pain he felt, Cobain developed anxiety-disorder self-medicated with heroin. Cobain heroin addiction worsened as the years go by. He made his first rehab attempt in 1992 when he found out that he was going to have a baby with lover, Courtney Love. Reports say that Cobain committed suicide, he shot himself with a shot gun. Though there were several reports that the Nirvana vocalist was murdered. Based on the songs that he wrote, it is clear that Kurt Cobain lived a life of misery. pain, and angst.

Blind Melon lead singer Richard Hoon 28, died of heroin overdose. Reports say that upon the increased success of the band in the early 90’s, the members of Blind Melon became increasingly involved in drug use. Hoon was always the primary offender and was constantly involved in drug-induced rampage and other related incidents. On October 21, 1995, Richard Hoon was added to a list of rock stars who died before 30.

Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, and Richard Hoon, all dead before age 30. What went wrong? Were they overwhelmed by fame that they lost control of reality and turned to drugs and other banned substances? It is clear that these rock stars were not happy at all. Death in some ways make people more interesting and famous than when they were still alive. However ,dead rock stars are reminders of the pain and anxiety that may take place as side effects of fame.

The Allure of Aluna, Princess of Lao Pop Music

Lao musical artists’ commitment to their craft dates back thousands of years. One folk tale captures the spirit of devotion with which the best musicians have experimented, creating many unique traditions and styles. According to that legend, a traditional Lao instrument called the khene was invented by a woman trying to imitate the sound of the garawek bird she had heard while on a walk one day.

Upon reaching her village she began experimenting with many different designs for her instrument, using plucked and bowed strings and various types of other materials before finally settling on a type of bamboo flute. The woman brought the new instrument before the king, who, after hearing her play, curtly responded that it was ‘fair.’ Modifying the instrument, she played once more and again asked the king if he was pleased. “Tia nee kaen dae,” he said, which means “this time it was better.”

The same persistent approach to finding the right kind of sound can be heard today in the mesmerising music of Aluna, the princess of pop in Laos.

Creative Drive

Aluna Thavonsouk is a Lao pop singer whose contemporary musical style draws upon older techniques and often includes traditional Lao instruments. In what she calls her ‘new sound,’ she may even begin including the khene.

“I started with normal pop songs. You learn as you go and I have changed my perspectives in writing songs as well as the way of making music and melodies,” Aluna said of her creative process. “The contemporary ideas came to my soul and I mix the traditional sounds into my music a lot these days, but I am not yet satisfied with the result. I am still looking for the new sound. It might take a year or forever… I don’t know, but it is exciting to me.”

Aluna’s humble attitude – she is also the general manager of her family’s hotel business in Vang Vieng – is uncommon for a musician of her stature, but her tirelessness has paid off ever since she began creating music back in 2002. To date, she has performed in U.S. cities like Chicago, Seattle and Los Angeles, and she has toured in Japan, China, Malaysia and throughout Southeast Asia. Her self-titled albums “Aluna” (2005) and “Aluna Part II” (2008) produced many number-one singles on regional radio charts and her hit “Khaum HouSuek Bork” earned her the award for Best Pop Song at the first annual Lao Music Awards in July 2008. Even The Today Show recognised this 29-year-old artist as one of the preeminent talents of Laos’ burgeoning pop music scene.

New Sounds

Laos’ contemporary music culture has emerged from a long history of political unrest and a complex mix of cultural influences. Although romantic songs and ballads have always been popular in Laos, Western music was first introduced in the 1920s during the French colonial period, impacting a new generation of Lao singers and composers. Then, following the country’s lengthy civil war and the 1975 Communist takeover, patriotic songs and anthems dominated the charts.

Since 2000, though, when the government began to relax the country’s music regulations, Lao record companies have been eager to promote singers who appeal to younger audiences. Today, pop music is booming and local Lao artists are heard on the radio alongside other foreign singers from the U.S. and Thailand.

Aluna is at the forefront of the homegrown talents now changing the Lao music scene. Her songs incorporate the loop of Morlum and other traditional Lao music – especially the catchy fast tracks – and often include unique beats and traditional instruments. Her lyrics focus on themes of love, but she also delves into topics like the environment, social classes and many other touchy subjects.

The artist is currently learning the khene (a bamboo mouth organ with many keys) and the traditional Lao flute, not to mention practicing the Lao Opera singing style, which requires a great deal of energy and the ability to play with how one projects one’s voice.

Deep Roots

While Aluna’s contemporary style has many musical influences, the traditional music of Laos plays an important part in creating that sound: “We, the new generation, never forgot the roots of our music,” she explained.

Born and raised in Laos, Aluna was surrounded by music from a very early age and always loved to sing. “People often ask who my music idols are and I respond, ‘They are my mom and dad.’ In fact, they are the first people who opened up my world to music. During my childhood, I’d often hear my dad singing with his guitar; my mom would sing along in her free time. They loved playing songs created by legends of the 60s and 70s like Elvis, Cliff Richards, The Beatles and The Carpenters, among many others. Those early experiences were so cool. Every now and then, I carry some of those old songs with me and sing along. Some people are surprised by my knowledge of old songs.”

When Aluna was young, there were always instruments around the house on which she could practice. (Her father was a musician.) At just five years old, she picked up her first instrument – a guitar.

“At that age, it was much bigger than my body and too big for me to hold, so I held it on my lap and played. I was always curious about how musical instruments produce sounds and how those sounds turn into different keys and notes. The guitar, keyboard and the harmonica were my favourites. With my mind’s empty canvas, I tried to differentiate the sounds, keys and notes using only my senses.” She did not study music, however, and never had professional training because it was too expensive.

”My childhood experience with music was so wonderful and peaceful that I knew I’d always want to be around it. Though I had been surrounded by music from a young age, I never thought of becoming a professional singer – that dream never existed.”

Life Changes

Meanwhile, Aluna excelled in her studies and received a scholarship to study abroad at a university in Australia. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business and returned to Laos to work at Thavonsouk Resort, her family’s business in Vang Vieng. Still, something was missing and she longed for the next adventure in her life. So, during the tourism low season, she took three months off from her job to travel to Europe. “That trip changed my life,” the singer reported matter-of-factly.

Arriving in Paris in the early morning of June 21, 2002, Aluna noticed that a festival was in progress. “I heard music along the road, and I saw people spontaneously come out and play music. They sang about everything using their guitars, saxophones, trumpets, harmonicas and accordions. They were everywhere – on roadsides, in the Metro and on almost every corner I walked past. I was so happy to be in this amazing environment. I felt like I was brought back to something familiar, but also something that I was missing for some time. It was great to hear music again.”

That event was France’s Fête de La Musique (Music Festival), which offered Aluna the chance to see shows by musicians such as Lenny Kravitz, Sheryl Crow, R.E.M., Bryan Adams and many other legendary artists.

“It was so inspiring!” the singer recalled. “I was about to celebrate my birthday a few days later and I truly felt that witnessing this event was one of the most precious gifts ever… I tuned in and silently listened, and in that moment, I felt like a bolt of lightening struck me. It was in that moment that my dream was born. I said to myself, ‘Yes, why don’t I create music? Why don’t I sing?!’ ”

Since then, Aluna has moved from strength to strength and encouraged others to follow their hearts. “There are many ways to realise your dreams and true passions,” she revealed. “Free your mind and look deep down into your heart, because sometimes ideas don’t come right away. Part of the journey is to develop and grow by following your passion.”

A Brief History of Jazz

Jazz became organized as a musical genre in the United States in the early 20th century, but its roots originated in the l9th century in the South. The Atlantic Slave Trade brought over half a million Africans to America and with them came musical influences from their native land. As African americans learned to play European instruments in the 19th century and developed their own styles of music, like the cakewalk. The Cakewalk is a combination of harmony and syncopation. It became very popular and caught on among white folk, and was played in minstrel shows.

Toward the end of the 19th century, a new style of music emerged called ragtime. After the abolition of slavery, opportunities to learn opened up to many African americans. However, there were not many job openings. Many talented African americans took jobs as musicians in minstral shows, in bars and clubs. Ragtime was created in the red-light districts of New Orleans and was a modifcation of the march, characterized by polyrhythms and syncopation. It was very upbeat and perfect for dancing. Ernest Hogan was a black entertainer who first recorded ragtime on sheet music in 1895. It became very popular music and was even adopted by white musicians in America and in Europe. The ragtime is considered the first type of jazz music.

The ragtime carried its popularity into the 20th century. Small jazz groups began to travel and eventually spread the music from coast to coast. Jazz even traveled across the seas. During World War I, the “Hellfighters” infantry band carried ragtime to Europe. By the 1920’s Jazz had become the dominant genre of music in America. Jazz was associated with parties, extravagent behavior and drinking. The peak of Jazz music in the first half of the century lasted from 1920 to 1933. Many believed it was the cause of moral decay in American society. This period was the dubbed “The Jazz Age.”

By the 1930’s ragtime had lost its novelty. A new grand and exaggerated form of jazz was introduced, the big band swing. Big band or swing jazz was composed of a very large section of brass and reed instruments and was headed by a bandleader or an arranger. Some of the most famous bandleaders were Duke Ellington and Glenn Miller.

In the 1940’s Swing Jazz introduced a string section and vocals to the big band. Swing jazz was broadcasted over the radio and soon travled to other countries. During World War II, for example, a collection of dissenting german youth known as the “swing kids” adopted swing jazz and swing culture. They would dance and play swing music in defiance to Hitler. He had forbidden any Swing Jazz or swing dancing because of its ties with African-Americans and Jews.

During the 1950’s a type of jazz called “cool jazz” was preferred. The 1950’s was a decade of conservatism and the jazz music of the period definitely reflected that. Cool jazz was a toned-down version of jazz, where the big band reduced in size and sound.

The 1960’s and 1970’s saw a new forms of jazz with the introduction of Latin cultural influence rock and roll and soul. In the 1960’s Afro-cuban jazz became popular, but was soon replaced by Brazilian Jazz. Latin jazz combined traditional jazz with unconventional instruments like bongos, morracas and different types of flute. Into the 1970’s soul jazz was formed from a mixture of soul, blues and gospel music. The unique thing about soul jazz was that the solo instrument was typically an organ, which was very new to jazz music. Finally the 1970’s saw a rise in rock and roll. Jimmy Hendrix was famous for infusing jazz with rock and roll and established a form of jazz- jazz infusion. In the recent history jazz has been experimented with and a plethora of subgenres have emerged like, pop fusion or “smooth jazz”, jazz rap, nu jazz and even vocal jazz.

Blues N’ Jazz: Jazz at its Best

Bringing alive the true Jazz moments, NCPA Mumbai presents, Blues N’ Jazz Series: Jazz at Its Best, this sunday. Witness the eclectic mix of the best Jazz musicians from across the globe including the US, Cyprus, Netherlands, Italy and Germany. All the highly talented and young musicians of the night are proud to be a part of the faculty at Mumbai’s The True School of Music. Believe us, this will be the biggest Jazz music night, you will ever witness. Jazz lovers, this is the night you can’t afford to miss!

The music for the concert is composed and arranged by renowned pianist Jo Junghanss, who recently celebrated the premiere of his compositions at Carnegie Hall, New York City. The music is arranged in the tradition of Jazz, bringing blues, soul and groove alive. His special part of the jazz concert series will feature a hand-picked international ensemble playing original jazz music. In the band, on the piano will be Jo Junghanaa, vocals will be of Mugdha Hasabnis, on the guitar will be Odysseas, Gianluca Libratore will be on the Bass, Dhir Mody will be on Percussion, on the tabla will be Pankaj Pathe and Saurav Ghosh will be on Drums. This will surely be a night to remember.

Mumbai’s The True School of Music has always remain in the centre of entertainment industry. It has produced some of the best musicians and Djs in the music industry. Jo Junghanss, the music composer and arranger for the concert is the Dean of The True School of Music. He has often been described as having “powerful, innovative sounds, expressiveness and almost explosive tension” and his improvisations “masterful”. He has recorded as sideman and bandleader for European music labels and played with Jazz greats like, John Riley, Dick Oatts and John Patitucci. As a composer, he has written for both classical and jazz musicians, and among his works are pieces for electronics and fixed media, film scores, and big and small band works.

Jazz is a kind of music which has embraced both East and West. Over the time we have seen some notable collaboration like that of Pandit Ravi Shankar and John Coltrane – where the western Jazz and Indian traditional music sublimes together. In Blues N’ Jazz Series: Jazz at its Best, you will witness the Indian Traditional Music subliming beautifully with the Western Jazz. The concert will showcase the best of both, the Jazz and Indian Traditional music.
